Tuberculosis (TB) Testing for UK Visa Applicants

If you’re applying for a UK visa to work, study, or reside for more than six months, you may be required to undergo a tuberculosis (TB) test. This guide provides essential information on TB testing requirements for visa applicants.

Countries Requiring a TB Test for UK Visa Applications

Applicants from certain countries must provide a TB test certificate as part of their UK visa application. To determine if your country is on this list, please refer to the official UK government website.

Approved Clinics for TB Testing

You must undergo TB testing at a clinic approved by the UK Home Office. It’s important to note that some countries do not have approved testing centres; in such cases, you will need to travel to a nearby country with an approved clinic.

Exemptions from TB Testing

You do not need to undergo TB testing if any of the following apply:

– You’re a diplomat accredited to the UK.

– You’re a returning UK resident who has not been away for more than two years.

– You have lived for at least six months in a country where TB screening is not required, and you’ve not been away from that country for more than six months.

What to Expect During a TB Test Appointment

During your appointment, you will typically have a chest x-ray to check for signs of tuberculosis. If the x-ray result is unclear, you may be asked to provide a sputum sample (phlegm coughed up from your lungs). If your test results are clear of TB, you will receive a certificate.

Validity of the TB Test Certificate

The TB test certificate is valid for six months from the date of your x-ray. You must include this certificate with your UK visa application.

Note: Immigration policies are subject to change. It’s advisable to consult the official UK government website or seek professional advice for the most current information.
