GMC Registration: A guide to the English Language Tests

If you plan to register with the General Medical Council (GMC), you must meet their English language proficiency requirements. This can be achieved by taking an approved language test: the Occupational English Test (OET) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Occupational English Test (OET)

How to Book

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Locations and Formats

IELTS can be taken in over 140 countries at more than 1,600 locations. It is available in two formats:

  • Paper-based.
  • Computer-based.

Fees

The cost of the IELTS Academic test is £195, though fees may vary depending on your location.

How to Book

  1. Locate your nearest IELTS test centre.
  2. Register and pay online or download the application form to submit at your local centre.
  3. After processing, you’ll receive confirmation of the test date and time. Speaking and Writing tests are usually held on the same day, but exceptions may apply.
