GMC Registration: A Guide to EPIC Verification
If you are applying for a GMC licence to practise medicine, it is mandatory to have your qualifications independently verified.
This verification is managed by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). They confirm the authenticity of your qualifications directly with the awarding institution using their Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) system.
The EPIC service ensures transparency and reliability in verifying medical credentials.
Qualifications Requiring Verification
The qualifications you need to verify depend on your GMC registration pathway:
- Postgraduate Qualification (PGQ) Pathway: Both the primary medical qualification (PMQ) and postgraduate qualification must be verified.
- PLAB Pathway: Only the primary medical qualification requires verification.
Preparing for EPIC Verification
Before starting the EPIC verification process, ensure your qualifications meet GMC’s acceptance criteria. Use the following resources to confirm eligibility:
- Criteria for Acceptable PMQs and PGQs: Available on the GMC website.
- Qualifications from the EEA or Switzerland: Check their acceptance as Relevant European qualifications on the GMC platform.
Note: If your qualifications do not meet GMC criteria, registration will not be granted, even if they are verified by ECFMG.
Steps to Verify Your Documents
To begin the EPIC verification process:
- Create an EPIC account: Provide personal details, including your medical education and licensure history.
- Upload your documents: Submit a recent photograph and a scanned copy of the passport photo page.
- Submit your qualifications: After confirming your identity, upload your qualifications electronically.
- Verification by ECFMG: They will verify your credentials directly with the awarding institution and notify you via email when the process begins.
Post-Verification Process
Once ECFMG verifies your qualifications, you will be notified via email.
If you authorise ECFMG to share the verification results, they will send the report directly to the GMC on your behalf.
Timeline for Verification
The time required for verification depends on:
- Institution Responsiveness: Most institutions respond within 90 days.
- Communication Method: Electronic submissions are faster than postal or courier services.
