GMC Registration: A Guide to the IELTS Test

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognised exam for assessing English language proficiency.

It is designed for individuals planning to work, study, or live in environments where English is the primary language of communication.

The IELTS assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills and is available in two formats:

  • General Training: Suitable for practical, everyday language usage, such as secondary education or work experience.
  • Academic: Focused on evaluating readiness for academic environments, such as higher education or professional registration.

Doctors aiming to register with the General Medical Council (GMC) must take the Academic version of the IELTS.

IELTS Exam Structure

The IELTS exam comprises four components:

  • Listening (40 minutes): Candidates answer 40 questions based on four audio recordings covering various contexts. An additional ten minutes is provided for transferring answers to the answer sheet.
  • Reading (60 minutes): Participants respond to questions based on three texts sourced from books, journals, or newspapers. The Academic test includes more analytical and discursive content.
  • Writing (60 minutes): This section includes two tasks:
    • Task 1: Interpreting data presented in charts, graphs, or tables.
    • Task 2: Writing an essay in response to a prompt.
  • Speaking (11–14 minutes): This involves three parts:
    • A personal interview.
    • A prepared talk on a specific topic.
    • A discussion exploring abstract themes.

IELTS Scoring

The IELTS is scored on a 0–9 band scale for each component, with whole or half scores (e.g., 7.0 or 7.5) awarded.
