UK Visas: The Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker visa has replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa. This guide simplifies the application process for healthcare professionals, particularly doctors, who wish to work in the UK.

The process requires careful preparation and adherence to specific guidelines.

Steps to Apply for a Skilled Worker Visa

Prerequisites:

Before applying, ensure you have a job offer and a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). You can apply for your visa up to 3 months before starting work in the UK, as indicated on your CoS.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Begin your visa application online: Have your passport and CoS ready.
  2. Provide the following information:
    • Personal details, including name, passport information, and contact details.
    • CoS reference number, employer details (name, sponsor license number), job title, salary, occupation code, and eligibility for the Health and Care visa.
    • Evidence of your English language proficiency.
    • Travel plans and accommodation details (you can leave these incomplete if plans are not finalised).
    • Family details, reasons for entering the UK, travel history, prior visa refusals, and any criminal convictions.
  3. Pay the visa application fee after submitting the required information.
  4. Book an appointment at a nearby visa application center. You will receive further instructions about the necessary documents.
  5. Upon booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the next steps and will need to select a location in the UK to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).

Attending a Visa Application Appointment

When attending your appointment, bring all required documents, including original copies if specified. Typical requirements include:

  • Your passport for identity confirmation.
  • Fingerprints and a photograph for your BRP.

Check the visa application center website for any additional details and guidelines.

Visa Application Fees

The Health and Care visa offers reduced fees and exempts applicants and dependents from the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

Fee breakdown:

  • Up to three years: £232.
  • More than three years: £464.

Tracking Your Visa Application

After submitting your online application, proving your identity, and providing the necessary documents, most decisions are issued within 3 weeks for Health and Care visa applicants.
If an appointment is required, expedited options may be available for an additional fee.

Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

The BRP serves as proof of your identity, immigration status, and entitlements in the UK. It includes your name, birth details, facial image, and fingerprints.

You’ll receive a BRP if you:

  • Apply for a visa exceeding 6 months.
  • Extend your visa beyond 6 months.
  • Apply to settle in the UK.
  • Transfer your visa to a new passport.

The BRP must be collected from the location you selected during the application process.
